Celina Leao, the federal district vice governor, indicated that the deceased may have detonated the explosives in an attempt to enter the court premises. “At this stage, we lean towards the theory of a suicide, given there was only one victim,” Leao said. She expressed hope that this was a “lone wolf” attack but acknowledged that the full motives and circumstances are still under investigation.
Following the incident, a bomb squad, accompanied by an explosive disposal robot, was promptly deployed to secure the area and conduct a thorough investigation. The court’s justices and staff were in the process of concluding a plenary session when the blasts forced them to evacuate the building swiftly and securely.
The nearby areas, including the Plaza of the Three Powers, were quickly cordoned off. This iconic square, symbolic of the confluence of the three branches of Brazil’s federal government, was also the site of the violent January 8 riots last year, when supporters of the former President Jair Bolsonaro stormed the governmental buildings.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s spokesperson, Jose Chrispiniano, confirmed that the president was not at the adjacent presidential palace during the time of the explosions. Meanwhile, Attorney General Jorge Messias has vowed that the federal police will conduct a rigorous and urgent investigation into these alarming events. “We need to understand the motivations behind these attacks,” Messias stated, emphasizing the urgency of restoring peace and ensuring security.
