FREMONT, Calif. (AP) — Police in Fremont are investigating an explosion that occurred inside an apartment complex, leading to the evacuation of adjoining units.
The incident took place at around 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday at a complex located at 37000 Waverly Terrace. According to authorities, the entire building shook as a result of the explosion, prompting initial concerns of a possible gas line rupture. Residents in the area were startled by the event and one eyewitness described feeling the explosion from below.
Subsequent investigation at the scene revealed the possibility of a drug lab within the unit where the explosion occurred. Detectives from the Major Crimes Task Force were called in to assist with the inquiry, further complicating the situation.
Furthermore, the aftermath of the explosion led to additional repercussions at a nearby hospital when a man checked himself into Kaiser San Leandro with several nurses subsequently reporting feeling ill. Alameda County Fire Department’s hazmat team was called in to respond, resulting in the closure of the hospital’s Emergency Department. Eventually, a dozen staff members reported feeling nauseous.
As the investigation continues, the substance responsible for the explosion and its impact on the hospital staff remains under close scrutiny. Meanwhile, residents returning to the apartment complex were met with surprise, with some finding that their power had been affected. Management informed one resident on the third floor that they would not be able to return home for the night, providing a hotel voucher instead.
Overall, the aftermath of the explosion has raised serious concerns for the safety and well-being of the residents in the surrounding area, prompting authorities to intensify their efforts to ensure the community’s security.
