Bologna, Italy – Italian rescue teams are currently involved in search and rescue operations at a hydroelectric plant near the city of Bologna after a tragic explosion resulted in the death of at least three workers, five injuries, and four individuals reported missing.
The blast, which occurred during maintenance work at the Enel Green Power’s Bargi plant south of Bologna, caused a massive explosion that rocked the facility, leading to structural collapses and flooding at the plant’s lower levels. Dozens of firefighters and divers worked tirelessly throughout the night following the incident to locate any missing individuals.
The tragic event has left local authorities and emergency responders grappling with challenging conditions as they navigate the aftermath of the explosion. Luca Cari, a spokesperson for Italian firefighters, expressed the difficulties faced by the teams, stating that the chances of finding survivors are slim given the complex circumstances they are confronted with.
Authorities have identified the three deceased workers as individuals ranging from 35 to 73 years old, with reports indicating that the explosion occurred during a testing operation involving around 15 workers, most of whom were employees of external companies contracted by Enel. Local prosecutors are expected to launch an investigation into the incident to determine the cause of the explosion.
The mayor of Camugnano, a nearby town, highlighted the significance of the power plant to the community, noting that the tragic event has deeply impacted local families who relied on the plant for employment. This latest accident has raised concerns about workplace safety in Italy, prompting two of the country’s largest unions to plan a 4-hour nationwide strike to draw attention to the issue. The incident adds to a series of worksite accidents across the country, including a fatal incident in February that claimed the lives of five workers while constructing a supermarket in Florence.
