Milford, MI — An explosion at General Motors’ Milford Proving Ground early Tuesday caused a massive fire and significant concern among local residents, though no injuries were reported. The blast, which occurred just before 7 a.m., originated from a natural gas processing unit where a tank containing an oil and brine solution fatally malfunctioned.
The explosion damaged two homes located within 100 feet of the epicenter and was powerful enough to be felt up to five miles away, stirring unease in the community. Despite the intensity of the blast and the damage inflicted, emergency response teams rapidly managed the situation, averting a potential disaster.
Firefighting crews from Brighton, Milford, Highland Township, Lyon Township, and Howell were quick to the scene, grappling with the challenge of limited water supply due to the absence of nearby hydrants. Tanker trucks were brought in to assist in controlling the blaze, which was contained within an hour. However, smaller fires persisted, fueled by ongoing natural gas leaks.
Brighton Fire Authority Chief Micheal O’Brien detailed the emergency response efforts. “Our teams acted swiftly to cool down adjacent tankers, preventing further damage,” O’Brien said. “We continue to monitor the site closely for residual fires and are conducting air quality tests to ensure the community’s safety. Thankfully, no evacuations were necessary.”
In an official statement, General Motors confirmed that their fire crews and local departments had the incident under control and were closely monitoring the situation. The company is also investigating the source of the fire to prevent future incidents.
Environmental impact is a significant concern following such incidents. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) responded by assessing the site for potential environmental damage. Fortunately, there was no immediate threat to groundwater or drinking water, but surface contamination from firefighting efforts required remediation. EGLE officials have since been working diligently to contain and clean the contaminated area.
As a precaution, local authorities blocked roads near the proving ground and directed commuters to alternate routes to ensure public safety and facilitate unhindered emergency operations.
