Jerusalem, Israel — Israeli forces shot and killed a Palestinian man in the West Bank village of Bruqin after he allegedly approached them carrying a bag believed to be rigged with explosives. This incident took place on Saturday amid an intensified search for a gunman responsible for the recent murder of a pregnant Israeli woman, who was shot while traveling to a hospital just days prior.
The woman was in a vehicle traveling between the Jewish settlements of Peduel and Berukhin when she was attacked. Reports indicate that her baby, delivered prematurely due to the violence, is currently in serious condition at Schneider Children’s Medical Centre near Tel Aviv but is now considered out of immediate danger.
In the wake of these events, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet security agency launched a series of targeted operations on Saturday, apprehending several suspects in Bruqin, which is situated close to the site of the woman’s shooting. The IDF confirmed that a joint investigation with the Israel Police is underway to uncover the details surrounding the attack.
The militant group Hamas praised the woman’s death, referring to it as a “heroic” act, although they did not claim direct responsibility for the shooting. Concurrently, IDF forces have cordoned off Bruqin and nearby Kafr ad-Dik as they continue their manhunt for the suspected perpetrator, believed to have acted alone.
Later on Saturday, tensions escalated further when IDF troops shot a Palestinian man accused of throwing stones at Israeli vehicles near the town of Burqa. The IDF reported that they opened fire on a group they were monitoring, resulting in one fatality and injuries to two others. This incident follows the recent killing of five members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad in a separate military engagement in the West Bank.
Since the outbreak of violence triggered by Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, more than 950 Palestinians in the West Bank have lost their lives, according to the Palestinian Authority’s Health Ministry. The IDF asserts that the majority of those killed were involved in armed confrontations or other aggressive actions against Israeli forces. Furthermore, nearly 6,000 Palestinians have been detained, including over 2,350 linked to Hamas.
Amidst this turmoil, there has been a notable rise in violence perpetrated by settlers against Palestinian communities. Reports detail that during this current wave of conflict, 52 individuals have died in terror attacks targeting both Israeli and Palestinian security personnel, with an additional eight security members killed during clashes with suspected militants in the West Bank.
As the situation continues to unfold, both sides remain entrenched in a cycle of violence, with heightened tensions offering little indication of resolution or peace in the near future.
