New Delhi, India — A routine operation by India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) turned violent when officials were assaulted during a raid at a farmhouse in the southwestern fringes of Delhi. The incident occurred in the area of Bijwasan and resulted in the severe injury of one ED officer. Authorities responded by detaining one individual linked to the altercation.
The raid, led by Assistant Director Suraj Yadav, targeted a property owned by Ashok Kumar, a chartered accountant suspected of involvement in a larger financial crime scheme. Despite protection from two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officers, the situation escalated, forcing the request for additional CRPF support.
Deputy Commissioner of Police for the Southwest district, Surender Choudhary, detailed how the confrontational scenario unfolded, leading to formal charges against the aggressors. Accusations include obstruction of duty, causing injury to prevent a public servant from performing their duties, and criminal intimidation.
This violent reaction underscores the ongoing investigations into an extensive network of cybercrime which Kumar is believed to be part of. The ED’s probe has unearthed an intricate link between chartered accountants and cryptocurrency traders, funneling illegally obtained funds through an elaborate money laundering scheme.
Officials discovered that around 15,000 “mule” accounts were used alongside pilfered debit and credit cards to fuel virtual wallet top-ups. These wallets were subsequently used to purchase cryptocurrencies, thereby obfuscating the origins of the stolen funds.
Yash, another accused who is believed to be related to Kumar, was also arrested in the aftermath of the incident. The investigations by the ED are positioned to take a deeper dive into cyber crimes ranging from phishing and QR code scams to call center frauds and deceptive part-time job offers, revealing the sophistication and breadth of the racket.
In the wake of the assault, the ED has vowed to intensify its efforts, with scheduled searches at multiple locations to dismantle the financial underpinnings of the cybercrime network. The agency emphasizes that protecting its officials is paramount, and any aggression against them will be met with strict legal consequences.
