London, Kentucky — After a tense 10-day manhunt, Kentucky authorities have located the body of Joseph Couch, a 32-year-old man suspected of a violent shooting spree that left five people wounded along Interstate 75. The discovery marked the end of a widespread search following the alleged attack which involved shooting at multiple vehicles.
Couch, a former member of the U.S. Army Reserve, was reported to have used an AR-15 rifle during the incident on September 7. Early that day, it is believed he purchased the rifle and around 1,000 rounds of ammunition in London before his disturbing attack unfolded. He also sent messages indicating plans to cause significant harm and ultimately commit suicide.
The chaos initiated by Couch led to an intensive search by law enforcement, employing helicopters, drones, and sniffer dogs over the rugged terrain near the interstate. This region, known for its dense woodlands, cliffs, and caves, presented significant challenges to the search teams.
The situation escalated to the point where Governor Andy Beshear labeled the event as “an act of violence and evil.” In response to potential threats, local schools opted for virtual sessions temporarily.
Authorities finally discovered a body, believed to be Couch’s, in a secluded wooded area approximately eight miles north of London. The discovery was prompted by noticeable vulture activity above the site. Nearby personal items further convinced the police that they had found the suspect, although formal identification was pending.
Couch’s military background, including his stint as a combat engineer until 2019, did not suggest a propensity for such violence. No deployments were noted during his service, which concluded with his exit at the rank of private.
Amid the manhunt, strategically positioned officers found Couch’s abandoned vehicle along with a weapon assumed to be used in the attack and an Army-style duffel bag tagged with his name. These clues were crucial in affirming Couch’s involvement in the shootings.
The local community, gripped by fear during the ordeal, was somewhat relieved by the end of the manhunt. A reward of $5,000 had been offered for information leading to Couch’s capture, generating hundreds of tips from the public.
Throughout this period, operations had to be suspended during the evenings, with officers remaining on alert to prevent any further incidents or Couch’s potential escape from the surrounded area.
