DUI and Cocaine Charges Lead to High School Principal’s Arrest

TAMPA, FL – The upcoming school year at Leto High School is clouded with uncertainty following the arrest of its newly appointed principal, Scott Hazlett. Just a week before students are set to return, Hazlett was detained by Temple Terrace Police on charges of driving under the influence and cocaine possession.

Hazlett, a long-time member of the Hillsborough County School District, was expected to step into his new role at Leto High School. However, recent developments have put his future with the school in jeopardy.

Linda Freed, co-founder of Mothers Against Drunk Driving in Hillsborough County, expressed her relief that the situation didn’t escalate further. “Thank goodness the officer intervened,” she said, emphasizing the potential risks involved.

The incident occurred early Saturday morning when Hazlett was stopped for speeding on East Fowler Avenue. Officers conducting speed checks observed signs of impairment and subsequently found cocaine in his vehicle.

Freed, who has been advocating for road safety for years, criticized Hazlett’s actions. “He was supposed to be a role model for students, demonstrating responsibility,” she remarked. “This was preventable.”

Just last month, Hazlett was publicly congratulated by the district for his new position. Now, the district has placed him on administrative leave, stating that the allegations are troubling and praising law enforcement’s quick action.

Hazlett has since been released on a $3,500 bond. The future of his role at Leto High School remains uncertain as the district continues to assess the situation.

The school community, parents, and students are left wondering what will come next, with the district yet to announce any permanent decisions regarding Hazlett’s employment.

As the new school year approaches, the focus shifts to ensuring stability and leadership at Leto High School amid this unexpected development.
