Eden, North Carolina — A dump truck driver has been indicted on multiple murder charges following a tragic incident in April that claimed the lives of four utility workers. The indictment against Michael Ray Vernon, 66, was filed Tuesday, marking a significant escalation in the legal repercussions stemming from the fatal crash.
On April 24, authorities reported that Vernon failed to stop at an intersection and collided with a crew of workers performing maintenance on power lines. The crash, which also involved a bucket truck, left four linemen dead at the scene: Douglas Garland Sides, 72, of Summerfield; Madison Carter, 32, of Sandy Ridge; William Evans, 35, of Randleman; and Matthew Lockwood, 30, of Winston-Salem. In addition to the fatalities, two other workers sustained serious injuries, while a third suffered minor harm.
Vernon now faces charges of four counts of second-degree murder and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. The indictments reflect the gravity of the situation and the impact on the community, which has mourned the loss of its valued workers.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol reported that Vernon’s truck struck the group after he ignored a stop sign at the intersection of Carroll Street and Church Street. The vehicle finally came to a halt when it ended up in a ditch.
In the aftermath of the incident, both Vernon and Elmer “Dusty” Curry, the superintendent of public works operations, were dismissed from their roles. This action underscored the seriousness with which officials have treated the matter. Public Works Operations Manager Darren Gatewood also announced his retirement shortly after the incident.
Initially, Vernon faced lesser charges related to a stop sign violation and several counts of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, but those charges were dismissed following the more serious indictments.
