Drive-thru dispute turns deadly at St. Louis County restaurant

Police say gunfire from a vehicle killed one worker and injured another.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — A late-night argument in a drive-thru line ended in a fatal shooting when someone in a car opened fire on a Steak ’n Shake, killing one employee and injuring another, police said.

Authorities say the shooting unfolded just before midnight at a restaurant along Bellefontaine Road, where workers were serving customers at the drive-thru. The violence has renewed concerns about employee safety in customer-facing jobs, especially during overnight hours when staffing is limited and tensions can escalate quickly.

According to investigators, the dispute began in the drive-thru lane when people inside a vehicle became involved in an argument. Police said the situation escalated rapidly, and at least one person inside the car produced a gun and fired multiple shots toward the restaurant.

Officers responding to the scene found two employees suffering from gunshot wounds. One woman was pronounced dead, while another worker was transported to a hospital with injuries. Authorities said the surviving victim was expected to recover, though details about the extent of injuries were not immediately released.

Police have not publicly identified the victims as they continue notifying family members. Investigators also have not released information about suspects, including how many people were inside the vehicle or whether any arrests have been made. Detectives said they are reviewing surveillance footage from the restaurant and nearby businesses.

The shooting occurred at a Steak ’n Shake location, part of a national chain known for its late-night hours and drive-thru service. Many of the chain’s restaurants operate overnight, a factor that can increase the risk of volatile encounters, law enforcement officials said in past cases involving similar incidents.

Residents in the surrounding neighborhood described hearing multiple gunshots and seeing emergency vehicles flood the area shortly afterward. Some said the incident has shaken their sense of safety, particularly because it happened at a place where workers and customers routinely gather late at night.

Police said the investigation remains active as they work to identify the shooter and determine what led to the confrontation. Authorities are asking anyone with information or video from the area around the time of the shooting to come forward.

As of now, no charges have been announced. Investigators said updates will be provided as new details become available, including whether additional victims or witnesses have been identified.
