Martinez, Calif. — A major explosion led to a significant fire at Martinez Refining Company, a facility noted for prior issues, on Saturday afternoon. The incident prompted a swift emergency response, including multiple fire crews and hazardous materials teams, as well as a delayed shelter-in-place order that was issued roughly three hours following the onset of the fire.
By 5 p.m., all personnel at the site were accounted for, and no injuries were reported, according to statements from the company and local authorities. Initial emergency calls were received around 1:40 p.m., and crews faced difficulties in accessing the site upon arrival, complicating the immediate response to the blaze.
Witnesses described dramatic scenes as flames soared approximately 200 feet into the sky, accompanied by thick black smoke moving eastward driven by prevailing winds. For safety, refinery employees were evacuated to Pacheco Boulevard.
Responding to the escalating situation, Contra Costa County Health Services issued a shelter-in-place advisory affecting areas north of the refinery, spanning from near Mountain View Drive to Vine Hill Road and Avon Way, and extending toward the Benicia Bridge. The advisory followed a general public health alert issued earlier at around 2 p.m., recommending that those with respiratory sensitivities remain indoors.
The company had previously communicated through the county’s emergency system a Level 2 notification, which is reserved for incidents with potential off-site consequences, including hazardous material releases.
During the emergency, significant transportation disruptions occurred as authorities closed Shell Avenue and both the Marina Vista Avenue on- and off-ramps leading to Interstate 680, although the freeway itself remained open.
The cause of the explosion and fire was not immediately known, and investigations were ongoing. Local fire district officials, alongside crews from Chevron and Coast Guard units operating in the nearby Carquinez Strait, were also actively involved in the response efforts.
The Martinez Refinery has been under scrutiny over the past year, facing multiple unplanned flaring events, an accidental release of coke dust, and legal challenges leading to the implementation of a continuous air-quality monitoring system to ensure compliance with regulations.
