SUWANEE, GA – A tragic shooting unfolded in Forsyth County late Friday, claiming the life of an off-duty Gwinnett County deputy and injuring the deputy’s child. The incident took place at a townhome on Harland Way, leaving the community in shock.
Authorities responded to a 911 call from a neighbor who reported a teenager at their doorstep. The teenager revealed that a domestic argument between their mother and her boyfriend had escalated, resulting in gunfire.
Upon arrival, deputies found the off-duty officer dead in an upstairs bedroom. The teenager, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds, was rushed to the hospital and is now in stable condition.
Eric Sumner, the suspect, fled the scene but was later captured by Monroe County deputies on I-75 after a brief chase. Sumner is now facing serious charges, including murder and aggravated assault with intent to murder.
The investigation is still active. Forsyth County deputies and detectives are meticulously gathering evidence, while a trauma services unit is present to manage the crime scene.
