CASCADE LOCKS, OR – After more than six decades submerged in the Columbia River, remains believed to belong to the Martin family have been recovered, shedding light on one of Oregon’s most enduring mysteries. The family vanished on December 7, 1958, during a drive along the scenic route, leaving behind a trail of unanswered questions.
Recent efforts led by a dedicated diver, Archer Mayo, have brought crucial artifacts and human remains to the surface. The Martins’ 1954 station wagon was discovered earlier this year, but initial attempts to retrieve it were only partially successful. Mayo returned to the site this summer, meticulously excavating the vehicle’s interior.
Among the discoveries were human bones and items that appear to be remnants of footwear worn by Barbara Martin. The leather had deteriorated, but the rubber soles remained identifiable. A wooden suitcase, now collapsed, and other personal belongings were also found, adding layers of context to the mysterious disappearance.
Key artifacts such as a camera case bearing Ken Martin’s name and a pair of shoes believed to be his were among the items retrieved. The diver also discovered aftermarket seatbelt buckles and a dome light, suggesting the car endured significant damage during its descent.
Mayo handed over the remains to Hood River County authorities, who have engaged state forensic experts to analyze the evidence. The investigation aims to determine how the family ended up at the bottom of the river, a mystery that has puzzled investigators and the public alike for years.
The diver’s next mission involves filling the vehicle with gravel to prevent further diving risks, ensuring that no others will face the dangers of the site. Mayo’s determination has brought a sense of closure to a case that has lingered in the shadows for generations.
The investigation continues, with authorities hoping that modern forensic techniques might unlock secrets hidden for decades beneath the river’s depths. As the story unfolds, the community remains hopeful for answers and a resolution to the long-standing enigma.
