Kyiv, Ukraine — In a significant escalation of hostilities, Russian forces targeted the Ukrainian capital in a series of drone and missile strikes early Thursday, resulting in at least 15 fatalities and leaving 48 injured, according to local officials. This marked the first substantial assault on Kyiv in several weeks, coinciding with faltering international peace initiatives aimed at resolving the protracted conflict.
Authorities reported that the attack involved an extensive aerial offensive, with Ukraine’s Air Force indicating that over 598 drones and decoys, along with 31 different types of missiles, were launched across the nation. This operation is now recognized as one of the most extensive air assaults since the beginning of the conflict.
Among the deceased were four children, aged between 2 and 17, underscoring the harrowing impact of the violence on civilians. Rescue teams were deployed to the affected areas, working diligently to free individuals trapped under the debris, and concerns persist that the casualty count may rise as search efforts continue.
In response to the attacks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned Russia’s actions, asserting that Moscow opts for military aggression instead of diplomatic engagement. “We call for a response from the global community, especially from those who advocate for peace yet have remained silent in critical moments,” he posted on social media following the strikes.
The Russian Ministry of Defence claimed that the strikes targeted military airbases and facilities associated with Ukraine’s defense industries, utilizing advanced long-range weaponry, including Kinzhal missiles. The ministry stated that all intended targets were successfully struck.
Moreover, the Ministry reported intercepting 102 Ukrainian drones during the same night, primarily in the southwestern region of the country. In addition, drone activity was linked to a fire outbreak at the Afipsky oil refinery in Krasnodar, with another blaze reported at the Novokuibyshevsk refinery in Samara.
