Mandi, India — Severe weather conditions have devastated Himachal Pradesh, resulting in at least 51 fatalities since the onset of the monsoon season on June 20, with an additional 22 individuals reported missing. Recent heavy rainfall has led to numerous incidents, including 11 cloudbursts, four flash floods, and a significant landslide, primarily affecting the Mandi district on Tuesday.
Emergency protocols have been activated throughout the state, with disaster response efforts in full swing. A dedicated control room is operating around the clock, while a public helpline has been established for residents to report emergencies. The latest update from the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) indicates that people across 12 districts have suffered significant losses, both in human and material terms, due to the relentless rainfall.
The SEOC reported various causes for the 51 confirmed deaths, including flash floods, landslides, and lightning strikes. Mandi district suffered the most considerable impact, recording 10 fatalities and seeing all of its 34 missing persons associated with the recent extreme weather events. The districts of Kangra, with 13 deaths, and Chamba, which experienced six fatalities, were also notably affected.
In addition to the loss of life, over 100 individuals have sustained injuries linked to incidents related to the ongoing monsoon. Damage assessments reveal that 204 houses have been affected, with 22 completely destroyed. Various commercial properties, including shops and livestock shelters, have also faced severe damage. The financial toll on private property is estimated at ₹88.03 lakh.
Public infrastructure has been hit particularly hard, with damages amounting to approximately ₹283.39 crore. The most heavily affected sectors include the Public Works Department, water supply services, and the energy sector. Local authorities are striving to address the extensive damage while ensuring that emergency resources are mobilized to support affected communities.
The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for the coming days, warning of heavy rainfall expected in isolated areas of the state from Friday through Sunday. As the situation continues to develop, officials urge residents to remain vigilant and heed safety warnings.
