Dallas, Texas — A gunman engaged in a shooting incident targeting an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) van at a detention center early Wednesday morning, resulting in two fatalities and one injury. Authorities have identified the shooter as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn, who was discovered deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene.
The FBI is treating the attack as a deliberate act of violence aimed specifically at federal immigration enforcement agents. Joe Rothrock, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Dallas Field Office, confirmed that evidence collected from the scene included ammunition inscribed with anti-ICE sentiments.
This incident marks a troubling escalation in violence directed at immigration officials. In July, two separate firearm assaults in Texas resulted in injuries to four agents, raising serious concerns about threats against law enforcement in the current socio-political climate. Following the latest shooting, Texas Senator Ted Cruz condemned the rhetoric used against ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) personnel, which he argues fuels political violence.
During a press conference, Rothrock stated, “What we’ve uncovered suggests a targeted campaign against ICE. We must address these escalating attacks.” His remarks echo broader warnings from law enforcement officials about the growing hostility directed at federal agencies.
Investigators found a blue Toyota Corolla believed to belong to Jahn, which had a map attached to it referencing radioactive fallout zones in the U.S., a detail that adds a layer of complexity to an already troubling narrative. Furthermore, no law enforcement officers were reported injured during the attack, but the lives of those involved in the shooting underscore a concerning reality.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem also weighed in, attributing the violence to a culture of inflammatory political rhetoric. “Mischaracterizing ICE agents as something akin to Nazi officers has tangible consequences. These men and women are committed to public safety,” she stated.
The targeted facility in Dallas had previously been the scene of a bomb threat in August, suggesting a pattern of aggression toward immigration enforcement sites. In that incident, a man claimed he had explosives, prompting a serious police response.
As investigations continue, officials promise to hold accountable those who perpetrate such acts against law enforcement. “We are committed to ensuring justice follows these attacks,” Rothrock said.
The investigation is ongoing, and officials urge anyone with information to come forward as the community grapples with the fallout from this tragic event.
