Gunmen unleashed a deadly attack in Guayaquil, Ecuador’s coastal city, resulting in the deaths of nine individuals and injuries to ten others, according to authorities on Sunday. The assault occurred in the neighborhood of Guasmo late Saturday evening, where a group of people engaged in sports fell victim to the armed group’s violence. The gunmen arrived in a grey Chevrolet Spark, opening fire on the unsuspecting victims.
Police Colonel Ramiro Arequipa confirmed the tragic outcome, announcing the loss of nine lives and the injuring of ten individuals as a result of the attack. No organization has yet come forward to claim responsibility for the brutal incident. This violent episode marks the second mass killing in two successive days, following the execution-style murders of five kidnapped individuals in the province of Manabi by an armed gang.
Authorities revealed that signs pointed towards the victims being mistaken tourists caught in the crossfire of a local drug-trafficking conflict. Out of the eleven people initially kidnapped, six escaped, including five minors, who were safely reunited with their families. Two suspects were apprehended in connection to the crime on Saturday morning, as reported by law enforcement officials.
In response to these disturbing events, Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa addressed the nation through social media, emphasizing the continued struggle against narcoterrorism and its affiliates. Noboa’s firm stance against such acts of violence was reaffirmed with the declaration of a state of emergency earlier in the year, enabling heightened security measures and a curfew in areas heavily impacted by crime, like Guayaquil.
