Ankara, Turkey — A tragic explosion triggered by natural gas in a residential area of Turkey’s Black Sea region resulted in one fatality and 17 injuries on Sunday. The blast, which caused extensive damage to a five-story building located on Osmancik road in Corum province, also affected neighboring structures.
Authorities promptly responded, deploying emergency crews including firefighters, medical personnel, and police to the site to aid in rescue operations. Efforts to secure the area saw the evacuation of nearby buildings and closures of street traffic to establish a secure perimeter.
The Corum Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has initiated a judicial investigation to determine the cause of the explosion and any potential oversights or violations that may have contributed to the incident. The aftermath of the Izmir explosion was severe, with damage extending to 11 nearby buildings. In response to the crisis, local officials, including Izmir Governor Suleyman Elban, took swift action to halt gas supply and evacuate the area, emphasizing the urgency of public safety.
Turkey’s Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc also remarked on the event, disclosing that an elaborate investigation had been launched, managed by two public prosecutors.
