CASS COUNTY, Mich. – After a deadly explosion at ‘Trak Oil’ left the building’s walls cracked and collapsed, the area is now surrounded by caution tape. Neighbors in the area were left shocked by the incident, with one resident, Erik Bidwell, describing how the blast caused his house to shake. The explosion resulted in the tragic death of 71-year-old Charles Lawrence, while 38-year-old Kevin Lawrence survived and is expected to recover, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Department.
Erik Bidwell, a neighbor, recounted the experience, stating, “Something exploded, I didn’t know if it was a gunshot, it was so loud, I couldn’t figure out what happened, I thought my propane tank blew up, the windows rattled, and came outside, there was this big ball of flame I came outside, there was this big ball of flame, like a mushroom cloud in the sky.” The shock from the blast was so powerful that it knocked a light off the side of Bidwell’s house. He also noted the significant impact inside his home, with items knocked off counters and windowsills.
In response to the incident, Jeremiah Jones, the chairman of the board of commissioners for Cass County, expressed sympathy for the family affected by the tragedy. He emphasized that such events are rare in the area, further highlighting the severity of the explosion.
As the community deals with the aftermath, the Michigan Department of Environment is investigating the environmental impact of the explosion, along with efforts to clean up the site. Additionally, the Michigan State Police fire marshal is conducting an investigation into the cause of the explosion. These efforts are essential in determining the circumstances that led to the tragic event and ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.
