Islamabad, Pakistan — A major protest demanding the release of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan escalated into deadly conflicts in Pakistan’s capital on Tuesday. Civilian casualties were reported following clashes between tens of thousands of Khan’s supporters and security forces, who had been deployed in large numbers and given shoot-to-kill orders to prevent the crowd from accessing key government areas.
The demonstration turned violent as protestors, who had journeyed from across Pakistan, clashed with police and army units near the Red Zone, a highly sensitive area housing the nation’s Supreme Court, Parliament, and the Prime Minister’s residence. Protestors lit shipping containers on fire and security forces responded with tear gas, rubber bullets, and reportedly live ammunition. By nightfall, authorities imposed a power blackout over central Islamabad, followed by a significant crackdown to clear the area.
The aftermath on Wednesday saw the streets of Islamabad clear of demonstrators, prompted by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party (PTI), led by Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi during the protests, to suspend further demonstrations citing the government’s harsh crackdown.
Despite official claims denying the use of live fire against protestors, PTI leaders stated that the violence resulted in numerous fatalities and injuries. They released names of eight individuals purportedly killed in the clashes, though these figures could not be independently confirmed. Meanwhile, official sources revealed that there had been 17 civilian deaths from gunfire, and several hospitals in Islamabad reported treating patients with gunshot wounds. One doctor, speaking on condition of anonymity, mentioned treating over 40 injured, pointing out that there were deaths and critical injuries among them. There was also mention of government attempts to suppress information regarding the casualties.
Within the hospitals, the dire situation was palpable. Relatives of the injured expressed fear and concern, with some recounting harrowing tales of survival amid gunfire. The PTI claims nearly a thousand protestors were detained following the demonstration.
This incident is rooted in ongoing political tensions following Khan’s arrest and the controversy surrounding the legitimacy of the recent elections. Khan, who has been in prison facing numerous charges for over a year, remains a potent political figure, with a significant following that asserts the charges are politically motivated. Before his arrest, Khan had been increasingly at odds with the military, which culminated in his government being toppled in 2022.
Khan had issued a robust call for his supporters to converge in Islamabad to demand his release, challenging the legitimacy of the February elections that brought Shehbaz Sharif to power. His party has consistently advocated for what it terms free and fair polling, resulting in multiple protests.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan has urged both Khan’s PTI and the Sharif government to engage in dialogue and seek a peaceful resolution, emphasizing the need to avoid further incitement and disruption.
