D.C. Man Convicted of Stabbing Officer After Fare Evasion Incident at Metro Station

Washington, D.C. — A man was convicted Thursday for a violent incident involving a Metro Transit Police officer at the Navy Yard-Ballpark Metro Station earlier this year. Erik Schleehauf, 43, was found guilty on multiple charges, including assaulting a police officer while armed.

The offense took place on April 15 when Schleehauf attempted to evade fare payment by climbing over the station’s fare gates. According to officials, a sergeant with the Metro Transit Police observed the maneuver and pursued Schleehauf, intending to detain him for fare evasion. When the officer confronted him on the escalator, Schleehauf resisted and was subsequently pepper-sprayed in an attempt to subdue him.

In a shocking turn, Schleehauf produced a sharpened metal bolt, held it between his knuckles, and beset the officer with several stabs aimed at the face. The assault left the sergeant with serious injuries, including puncture wounds to his cheek and jaw, which led to lasting nerve damage.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro condemned the attack, emphasizing that such violent behavior will not be tolerated in the district. She expressed concern about the implications of the incident, highlighting the dangers faced by law enforcement officers who are simply performing their duties to maintain public safety.

During the trial, prosecutors underscored the reckless nature of Schleehauf’s actions, portraying him as a threat to public safety. The evidence presented included witness testimonies and details about the injuries sustained by the officer, who was simply attempting to enforce transit regulations.

After the incident, Schleehauf was taken into custody at the scene. The judge overseeing the case, Robert Salerno, scheduled a sentencing hearing for October 3, where Schleehauf is expected to face significant penalties for his crimes.

This conviction underscores a growing concern in urban transit systems about the risks faced by officers and the general public. Officials stress that attacks on law enforcement cannot be tolerated and that measures will be taken to ensure the safety of transit users and personnel alike.
