HAMPTON, Va. – Crime in Hampton has seen a shift, according to Police Chief Jimmie Wildman. While homicides have decreased compared to last year, burglaries are on the rise, posing a new challenge for law enforcement in the community.
The Wingstop shooting last month remains a focal point of investigation, as Chief Wildman disclosed that warrants have been issued for the suspect involved in the tragic incident that claimed the life of an employee. The police are actively working with the U.S. Marshals to locate and apprehend the individual responsible for the crime.
In addressing the overall state of crime in the area, Chief Wildman highlighted key statistics, revealing that homicide numbers have dropped this year. However, the community has still experienced three shooting-related deaths. It is essential to note that these figures do not account for instances of justified homicides where individuals acted in self-defense.
Recent incidents, such as the killings of 17-year-olds Vic’Quan Newton and Brian Fullerton, have deeply impacted the Hampton community. Residents express concerns over the prevalence of violent crimes involving juveniles, emphasizing the urgent need for effective measures to address the issue.
Discussing strategies to engage with youth and combat crime, Chief Wildman acknowledged collaborative efforts with organizations like Hopeful Hampton and the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office through the Ceasefire program. These initiatives aim to build stronger connections with young individuals and steer them away from criminal activities.
Chief Wildman additional mentioned a surge in burglaries, particularly targeting commercial establishments like vape shops and cell phone stores. Despite these challenges, Hampton’s overall crime rate remains lower compared to neighboring cities in the region. Thanks to the implementation of surveillance cameras throughout the city, authorities have successfully prevented crimes and aided in solving cases, underscoring the importance of technology in enhancing public safety efforts in the community.
