Kendrapada, India — An investigative team from the state crime branch visited Jajpur’s district police station this week, launching a probe into the violent assault on Himanshu Sekhar Sahoo, an Independent MLA from Dharmasala. The attack, carried out by unidentified assailants, occurred last Wednesday evening near Budha Bridge, within the jurisdiction of the Jajpur sadar police station.
The crime branch’s arrival follows the transfer of the case from local police authorities, reflecting the gravity of the situation involving a public representative. During their investigation, the crime branch officials took a statement from Sahoo’s personal security officer, Shakti Samanta Rout, who was also targeted in the ambush. Rout’s initial complaint detailed the events, noting that their vehicle was significantly damaged during the incident as they were en route to a meeting in Jajpur town.
In response to the attack, local administration clamped down on potential escalations of unrest. Jajpur’s District Collector, P Anvesha Reddy, announced the imposition of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, effectively placing prohibitory orders in key areas to manage the law and order situation. This strategic decision aims to curb any further disturbances by restricting gatherings and maintaining strict surveillance.
The administration’s concerns are evident in their substantial deployment of security forces. Jajpur’s Superintendent of Police, Yash Pratap Shrimal, noted that about 40 platoons of police have been mobilized, with continuous patrols in sensitive zones. The thorough checks of vehicles and the visible presence of security personnel are part of a broader effort to reassure the community and deter potential agitators.
The emphasis on maintaining peace was underscored by a recently organized flag march in Jajpur town, which saw participation from key figures such as the collector and the superintendent, among other senior officials. The visible leadership is part of an orchestrated response to convey control and re-establish a semblance of normality in the wake of the violent incident.
As of now, the police have made significant progress in their efforts to clamp down on the culprits responsible for the assault on MLA Sahoo. Nineteen individuals have been arrested under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, reflecting a swift and broad law enforcement response to the incident.
