Bridgeport, CT — Authorities have apprehended a 17-year-old in connection to the shooting death of Daily Jackson Jr., reflecting a grim episode that adds to the youth violence in the area. Police are examining potential ties between this incident and another teenager’s murder that occurred last November.
The suspect, whose identity remains protected due to juvenile privacy laws, was detained Monday and placed in a juvenile detention center in Bridgeport. Officials expect the case to transition to adult court by Wednesday, at which time the teenager’s identity may be disclosed.
The arrest follows the tragic loss of 17-year-old Jackson, a Riverside Academy student who was fatally shot in a drive-by incident on Dec. 3, 2022. The attack occurred as he was walking home in the evening. Jackson was found seriously wounded in a driveway on Shelton Avenue and succumbed to his injuries shortly after at Yale New Haven Hospital.
This case appears interlinked with the death of 16-year-old Uzziah Shell, another Riverside Academy student and a known acquaintance of Jackson. Shell was killed in gunfire on Nov. 22, also just after school hours, near Goffe and Hudson streets in the Dixwell area of the city. During this separate but perhaps related incident, bullets also struck a nearby school bus, fortunately without causing additional injuries.
While police have not explicitly disclosed the motives behind these shootings, their proximity and the victims’ connections suggest a disturbing pattern. The community and authorities are deeply concerned about the uptick in youth violence, particularly involving students from the same school.
The police have planned a press conference for Wednesday afternoon, where they are expected to share more details about the investigation and address the community’s growing anxieties over public safety, especially concerning its younger residents.
Law enforcement’s ongoing efforts to curb these violent outbursts and find justice for the victims underscore a pressing need for strategies that effectively address and prevent youth crime in the region. Community leaders, educators, and parents are calling for collaborative efforts to secure safer environments for young people, emphasizing the importance of intervention and support systems.
This latest arrest is a critical step in the continued battle against gang-related violence and criminal activities that entangle young individuals, robbing them of their potential and peace. As the legal proceedings advance, the community awaits answers and actions that will hopefully lead to a decrease in such tragic incidents and restore a sense of security among the residents.
