Comox Valley Police Apprehend Suspect Following Brutal Assault on Elderly Man in Courtenay

Courtenay, Canada — Authorities have apprehended a man in connection with a violent assault on an elderly individual that occurred earlier this month. The incident was reported on August 10 when witnesses alerted police after a woman was heard crying out for help regarding her husband’s attack near Lewis Park.

Responding officers arrived at the scene and found the elderly victim bleeding significantly from his face, lying on the ground. Bystanders provided crucial information, leading police to identify and detain the suspect, who was positioned nearby.

Inspector Scott Mercer, who oversees the Comox Valley RCMP, described the incident as a “senseless attack” on a defenseless member of the community. He commended the witnesses for their courage in stepping forward, emphasizing that their prompt actions were instrumental in securing the suspect’s swift arrest.

The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Mevlin Teagai, is not unfamiliar to law enforcement. He has been charged with aggravated assault and robbery, and he remains in custody, pending further court proceedings.

While the elderly man sustained serious injuries, authorities report that they are not life-threatening, and he is expected to make a recovery.
