Community Unites in Heartfelt Tribute as Beaumont Teen Kryst’shun Burkett is Remembered with Balloon Release Following Tragic Shooting

BEAUMONT, Texas — A community is in mourning following the shooting death of 17-year-old Kryst’shun Burkett, who was remembered in a heartfelt tribute Friday at the North Ridge Manor Apartments. Family, friends, and former classmates gathered to honor his life, releasing blue and silver balloons into the sky at the very location where Burkett lost his life earlier in the week.

Burkett was shot while visiting friends at the apartment complex on Tuesday night, leaving those who knew him grappling with profound grief and loss. Those in attendance described him as a devoted father and an aspiring musician with big dreams for the future.

“He had a unique ability to light up any room he walked into,” said former classmate Talia Levanc, recalling Burkett’s warm spirit. “He was genuinely one of the nicest people I’ve ever met.”

In connection with Burkett’s death, Beaumont police arrested 19-year-old Leon Goodman, who faces a murder charge with a bond set at $1.5 million. Authorities reported that Goodman had only recently been placed on probation for another offense. In addition, a 16-year-old has also been detained, but details remain limited due to the minor’s age.

Burkett’s grandmother, Anna Winn Johnson, painted a picture of a young man with a bright future ahead. “He was intelligent and creative, and he was on track to graduate early,” she said, noting his passion for music. “His life was taken too soon, and he had so much to offer the world.”

Johnson revealed that her grandson had befriended the alleged assailants, expressing her belief that the shooting was not gang-related. “He was just visiting friends when he got shot. There was no justification for it,” she said, her heart heavy with sorrow.

Burkett left behind a 10-month-old daughter, a fact that weighs heavily on his former partner, Brenya Boudreaux. “I will forever carry his name and his legacy,” she expressed, vowing to raise their daughter surrounded by loving family and support.

As authorities continue their investigation, Johnson hopes that Burkett’s tragic death will serve as a catalyst for change regarding youth violence in their community. “Reach one, teach one,” she implored, encouraging compassion for young people rather than negative labels.

Beaumont police announced that there would be no further updates available at this time, leaving the community reflecting on the senseless loss of a promising young life.
