TREMONTON, Utah — The community is grieving the loss of two police officers who were killed in the line of duty while responding to a domestic dispute late Sunday evening. The tragic incident has left a profound impact on local law enforcement and residents alike as they come to terms with the unexpected violence.
In a press conference held on Tuesday, law enforcement leaders described the heroism of Sgt. Lee Sorensen and Officer Eric Estrada, who perished when they answered multiple 911 calls from a residence on Sunday night. Initial reports indicate that one officer was engaged in conversation with a person inside the home when gunfire erupted. The second officer arrived shortly thereafter, leading to both officers sustaining fatal injuries.
Box Elder County Sheriff’s Deputy Mike Allred, who responded to assist, was also injured in the chaotic scene along with his K-9 partner, Azula. Deputy Allred managed to take cover while maintaining communication with other responding officers, helping redirect them away from the line of fire. Sheriff Kevin Potter praised Allred’s actions, suggesting that they may have prevented even greater loss of life.
There are still many unanswered questions regarding the incident, including the sequence of events leading to the officers’ deaths. Investigators from Weber County are actively looking into the case, but further details were not provided at the news conference.
The suspect reportedly surrendered after bystanders engaged him in conversation, effectively de-escalating the situation. Although the identity of the suspect has not been publicly released, law enforcement is working diligently to gather the necessary evidence.
Sheriff Potter noted that Allred and Azula underwent surgery and are currently recovering at home. “It was a narrow escape from a potentially even more horrific outcome,” he remarked as he reflected on the events of that night.
In remembrance of their fallen colleagues, a vigil took place on Tuesday evening, drawing the community together in solidarity. Both officers will be honored with riderless horses at the Box Elder County Fair, a poignant tribute led by two of Sorensen’s children.
Tremonton-Garland Police Chief Dusty Cordova spoke emotionally about the profound loss while highlighting the courage displayed by Sorensen and Estrada. He expressed gratitude that their quick actions likely prevented additional casualties, acknowledging the chaos that surrounded the shooting as officers faced an unpredictable and dangerous situation.
Local leaders, including Tremonton Mayor Lyle Holmgren and Garland Mayor Linda Bourne, echoed Cordova’s sentiments, emphasizing the bravery and dedication demonstrated by the officers. “This unspeakable tragedy has shaken our community,” Bourne stated. “They have shown the utmost commitment to serving and protecting us.”
As the mourning continues, the community rallies to support the families of the officers and honor their legacy, recognizing the ultimate sacrifice made in the line of duty.
