Community Unites for Beach Bonfire Tribute, Advocating ‘Jayda’s Law’ to Honor Slain Teen and Combat Gun Violence

MUKILTEO, Wash. — Family and friends gathered on Thursday to honor the memory of 13-year-old Jayda Woods-Johnson with a heartfelt beach bonfire tribute. This gathering marked one year since Jayda lost her life in a tragic incident at Alderwood Mall in Lynwood, where she was struck by a stray bullet amid a nearby altercation. Authorities have identified Jayda as an innocent victim, having no ties to the individuals involved in the conflict.

On that fateful day, Jayda was enjoying a shopping trip with a friend when Samuel Gizaw entered the mall, instigating a confrontation with a group of young men. During the scuffle, Gizaw discharged his firearm indiscriminately, fatally wounding Jayda, who was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Cali Huffman, Jayda’s cousin and confidant, reflected on her love for the beach, noting that the tribute included a bonfire surrounded by at least 50 friends and family members. “She would appreciate this gathering so much,” Cali remarked, recalling how Jayda cherished the little things life offered — like a beautiful view. The bond between the cousins resembled that of sisters, often spending long hours basking in the sun together.

“We chose this spot because Jayda was a summer lover,” said Huffman. “Gathering around a fire, roasting s’mores with friends and family would have undoubtedly ranked among her favorite activities.” The event served not only to remember Jayda but also to look forward and honor her legacy.

Coach Mike, Jayda’s middle school track coach, announced the creation of commemorative shirts featuring her uniform number. These shirts will help raise funds for the track program, supporting future athletes. “Donations can be made in her honor to the track program at the school,” he added, reinforcing the community’s commitment to preserving Jayda’s spirit through supportive initiatives.

The gathering also emphasized the need for greater action against youth violence, as organizers rallied support for “Jayda’s Law.” This proposed legislation aims to impose stricter penalties on juvenile offenders, especially in homicide cases. “There’s currently a lack of accountability when minors are found with firearms,” Cali explained, highlighting the urgent need for change. An online petition advocating for the law has garnered thousands of signatures from concerned citizens.

Cali voiced her frustration about the slow progression of Jayda’s case through the judicial system. She expressed a deep concern for the many young individuals like Gizaw who continue to pose risks to their peers. “We will keep her memory alive through gatherings like this, celebrating Jayda and everything she loved,” she said, underscoring the commitment to honor her cousin’s legacy.

“She was someone who truly appreciated life and all it encompassed,” added Huffman, emphasizing Jayda’s vibrant spirit. The family remains dedicated to ensuring that her light continues to shine brightly in the hearts of those she touched.
