PORTAGE, Ind. — A tragic shooting in Portage, Indiana left a high school community in mourning after a domestic incident resulted in the deaths of two individuals, including a beloved school staff member, and left another critically injured. Brandy Manville, an administrative assistant at Portage High School, and her husband Charles were found deceased in their home on Monument Avenue on Friday evening.
Portage Police were called to the scene around 7:41 p.m. following reports of a “domestic disturbance.” According to authorities, the situation escalated quickly when the alleged aggressor, identified as Charles Manville, threatened violence while intoxicated and armed. During the emergency call, operators overheard threats followed by gunfire before law enforcement breached the residence.
Upon entry, officers discovered Charles with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His wife Brandy and their 21-year-old daughter, also shot, were found nearby. Only the daughter survived the ordeal, sustaining serious injuries but now in stable condition, although still battling life-threatening complications according to hospital officials.
The Portage High School community gathered the following day to honor Manville’s memory with a moment of silence. The principal, reflecting on her impact, highlighted her roles beyond just a staff member. “Brandy was not only integral to our administrative operations but she embodied the spirit of caring and mentorship that is the hallmark of a nurturing educational environment,” he stated.
Friends and colleagues of Brandy described her as a dedicated mother and a protective force in the lives of those she cared for. “She was the best mother you could ever ask for,” said Olivia Chelich, a close friend of Manville’s. “Brandy dedicated herself fully to her children and any student who walked through her office door.”
The impact of the violence has reverberated through the community, leaving students and staff to cope with the sudden loss under such tragic circumstances. Chelich, mourning the loss, expressed her despair over the incident. “This is not fair,” Chelich lamented. “This was not how it was supposed to be.”
Police have indicated that they believe the shooting was an isolated incident with no further threat to the local community. However, the motivation behind Charles Manville’s actions remains unclear as investigations continue.
