Auckland, New Zealand — A local shopkeeper suffered severe facial injuries after being assaulted by a thief she pursued for stealing beef jerky from her store in Pt Chevalier, Auckland. The incident has left the community in shock and raised concerns about safety among small business owners.
Prakash Patel, the husband of the injured woman, recounted the harrowing events that unfolded last Thursday evening. Patel explained that his wife was not on duty at their store, Pasadena Dairy, when the thief struck. She had just returned from shopping and noticed a young man fleeing with stolen goods. Despite being off the clock, she decided to follow the shoplifter.
According to Patel, the chase led down a nearby road where she confronted the thief. The encounter quickly escalated when the thief, realizing he was being followed, assaulted her by punching her in the face three times before fleeing the scene. The attack left the shopkeeper with significant facial wounds and bleeding.
Neighbours came to the woman’s aid while awaiting medical help, which arrived approximately 30 minutes later. “She’s been severely hurt; her eyesight is affected, and she can’t open her eyes due to the swelling,” Patel said, visibly distressed.
The family has shared images of the attacker on social media, hoping someone might recognize him and come forward with information. The suspect is described as a young male with short dark brown hair, seen wearing a black jumper, a red shirt, and sporting a black belt bag at the time of the incident.
Local authorities have confirmed that an investigation is underway to locate the assailant. They also commended the quick response of the passersby who assisted the victim and alerted emergency services.
Prakash Patel expressed his fear and concern following the violent incident, particularly for the safety of his young family. “I’m a little bit scared now, because I have one little 4-year-old boy,” he said, reflecting on the broader implications of the attack on his family’s sense of security.
The community has rallied around the Patel family, condemning the violence and offering support. Many local residents have emphasized the need for increased police patrols and security measures to prevent future incidents.
This attack has not only impacted the victim physically but has also instilled fear among the local shopkeepers of Pt Chevalier, who are now reevaluating their security measures to ensure the safety of their outlets.
Police continue to solicit any information related to the attack, hoping that public assistance can help expedite the capture of the perpetrator. Meanwhile, the community remains vigilant, hoping that increased awareness and preventive measures will deter such incidents in the future.
