Houston, Texas – Family, friends, and community members gathered to honor the life of 18-year-old Jarvon Coles, a standout football player and student at North Short High School. Coles, who was in his senior year and had plans to attend Lamar University, tragically lost his life at a house party in Humble over the weekend. Harris County Sheriff’s deputies reported that someone had fired shots into the backyard where Coles and others were gathered, resulting in his untimely death.
Hundreds of people, including classmates, coaches, and family members, came together for a balloon release ceremony to pay tribute to Coles. His family released 10 balloons to honor the linebacker who donned the #10 jersey and had achieved a remarkable 4.1 GPA. Described as a role model by a family friend, Coles had aspirations of continuing his football career in college and eventually playing in the NFL.
The party where the tragic incident occurred was held at a short-term rental property with over 100 attendees, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Despite efforts to save him with CPR and transportation to the hospital, Coles did not survive the shooting. His family has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of their beloved son and is urging anyone with information to come forward to help bring justice for Coles.
Valerie Payne, Coles’ great aunt, lamented the prevalence of gun violence among young individuals and emphasized the need for the community to step up and provide any information that could lead to arrests in the case. Coles’ great uncle, Darren Payne, echoed the sentiment, calling for justice and closure for the family as they prepare to lay him to rest on Saturday, March 16. As the investigation continues, the community remains united in honoring Coles’ memory and seeking accountability for his senseless death.
