Community Comes Together to Honor Beloved Life Lost to Tragic Road Rage Incident

Hideout, Utah — A gathering of family and friends came together on June 21 to honor Patrick Hayes, whose life was tragically cut short in a road rage incident last September. Hayes, known for his infectious laughter and kindness, was shot after an altercation near the Ross Creek day-use area. Nearly nine months later, his memory continues to resonate deeply within the community.

His fiancée, Sue Ann Kern, recalled Hayes as a person who brought joy wherever he went. “He had a way of effortlessly making friends,” she said. Kern added that Hayes was known for his warm embraces and humorous demeanor. His brothers echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing his vibrant spirit and generosity. “He’d do anything for you,” Matt Hayes stated, highlighting the profound loss felt by their family.

The celebration of life took place on a picturesque beach, just a mile from the site of Hayes’ death. The attendees shared heartfelt stories and cherished memories, surrounded by the soothing sounds of water. Kern remarked that the venue was fitting for Hayes, a lifelong swimmer and water polo enthusiast. Dressed in his favorite team T-shirt and a blue hat embroidered with the phrase “I’ll be there for you,” Kern expressed her appreciation for the supportive community that gathered in remembrance.

Michael Hayes, the eldest brother, reflected on the special bond he shared with Patrick as they matured together. He fondly remembered long conversations about a variety of topics, all of which strengthened their relationship. “That connection was built over time, creating a deep friendship,” he said.

Despite the warmth of the occasion, unresolved feelings lingered regarding Hayes’ untimely death. The handling of the case by law enforcement has left the family frustrated. Matt Hayes voiced his anger over the Wasatch County Attorney’s Office decision not to file charges against the shooter. “What happened has shifted our grief into frustration,” he explained.

The shooting incident occurred when Greg Kyle DeBoer shot Hayes and subsequently fled the scene. He was later arrested and charged with obstruction of justice after admitting to the shooting and disposing of the weapon. The community awaits further developments, as DeBoer has yet to enter a plea, and the court has not decided on a trial date.

In February, Christian Hayes, Patrick’s son, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against DeBoer. This legal action underscores the family’s determination to seek accountability for their loss. Both the criminal and civil cases are progressing through the court system, leaving Hayes’ loved ones to navigate both grief and anger while advocating for justice.

As those who knew Patrick gathered to celebrate his life, they clung to cherished memories, honoring a man whose spirit touched so many.
