LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities announced the arrest of a 37-year-old Columbia man, Terry Lee Self Jr., who has been charged with the murder of his 56-year-old mother, Regina Arroyo. The incident, which dates back to December last year, came to light after Arroyo’s body was discovered in the Edisto River on December 3.
According to Sheriff Jay Koon of Lexington County, the investigation revealed a disturbing sequence of events leading to Arroyo’s death. Detectives determined that the altercation began at the residence of Self, culminating in Arroyo being forcibly strangled and her body subsequently disposed of in the river. This tragic outcome followed a report of Arroyo missing since December 1, 2023.
Sheriff Koon underlined the intensive investigative efforts over the past seven months, aiming to pinpoint the perpetrator and secure justice for Arroyo. He expressed hope that the arrest might begin to provide closure for Arroyoi’s family and friends who have been grappling with the uncertainty and grief since her disappearance.
Self is currently being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center on charges unrelated to his mother’s death. During his recent court appearance, a magistrate judge denied bond, underlining the gravity of the charges he faces.
The case highlights ongoing challenges in addressing domestic disputes that tragically escalate to violence. Sheriff Koon emphasized the importance of community awareness and reporting such disputes before they culminate in irreversible outcomes.
This arrest marks a significant step in what has been a painstaking journey for law enforcement and the bereaved family, who are still processing the grim reality of their loss. As the judicial proceedings continue, the community watches on, reminded of the fragile nature of familial relationships and the devastating impact of domestic violence.
