HARRISONBURG, Va. – In a tragic turn of events in 2022, a man accused of the shooting deaths of two police officers at a Virginia college has pleaded guilty and received a life sentence. Alexander Campbell, 29, admitted to two counts of first-degree murder in the killings of Bridgewater College Officer John Painter and Campus Safety Officer J.J. Jefferson, along with using a firearm during the felonies. The presiding judge in Rockingham County Circuit Court accepted the plea agreement, resulting in two life sentences plus an additional six years in prison for Campbell. The trial originally set for April was averted by Campbell’s decision to plead guilty.
The victims, John Painter, 55, and J.J. Jefferson, 48, were well-known on campus as the “dynamic duo,” having shared a close friendship. Campbell, once a student at the college and participant on the cross-country team from 2013 to 2017, committed the heinous act that led to the officers’ deaths on February 1, 2022, outside the college’s Memorial Hall. At a preliminary hearing, a witness detailed the confrontation between the officers and Campbell, in which shots were fired. Subsequent accounts from the arresting officer described Campbell as coherent, expressing remorse and a desire to apologize to the officers’ families.
Following Campbell’s admission of guilt, Rockingham County prosecutor Marsha Garst outlined the evidence that would have been presented at trial, revealing disturbing details about Campbell’s actions leading up to the tragic event. It was disclosed that Campbell had been residing unlawfully in the basement of Memorial Hall for days prior to the shooting, possessing not only the revolver used in the crime but also two shotguns, an air rifle, and a lock-picking kit. The victims’ families had the opportunity to share impact statements before Campbell’s sentencing, highlighting the immense loss they have endured. To spare the families further anguish, a plea deal was negotiated with their consent, avoiding a prolonged trial.
