The Texas Rangers are investigating the gunfire that ended a multijurisdictional chase Monday evening at a Sam’s Club.
BURLESON, Texas — A Cleburne police officer was shot in the leg and a person being pursued by police was killed Monday evening after a vehicle chase crossed several North Texas communities and ended near a Sam’s Club in Burleson, authorities said.
The incident began about 6:50 p.m. Aug. 24, when Cleburne police responded to a report of a person brandishing a firearm while inside a vehicle. Police said a pursuit began after officers arrived and continued through Alvarado before heading north on Interstate 35W toward Burleson.
The chase ended near the Sam’s Club at 600 N. Burleson Blvd., along the interstate service road. Authorities said shots were fired during the incident. The person officers had been pursuing was struck by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene.
A Cleburne police officer was also struck in the leg by gunfire. The officer was taken to a hospital for treatment and was reported in stable condition Monday night. Authorities had not publicly identified the officer or provided additional information about the officer’s injuries by early Tuesday.
Several law enforcement agencies converged on the area after the pursuit ended. Burleson police, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety were among the agencies that responded. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office said two of its deputies were involved in the incident.
Burleson police said there was no known continuing threat to the community after the shooting. Authorities nevertheless asked people to avoid the area while investigators worked at the scene, where a heavy police presence remained around the store Monday night.
Officials have not released the identity of the person who was killed. They also have not provided a complete account of the final confrontation, including the sequence of gunfire or which officers fired their weapons. Those questions are among the issues investigators will examine as they reconstruct what happened at the end of the pursuit.
The Texas Rangers were notified and responded to investigate the officer-involved shooting. The Rangers commonly investigate shootings involving law enforcement agencies in Texas, and authorities said the information released Monday night remained preliminary as evidence was gathered.
The shooting followed a pursuit that began more than 15 miles south of Burleson and brought officers through multiple jurisdictions before reaching the busy retail area along Interstate 35W. Officials had not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the original report of a person brandishing a firearm.
As of early Tuesday, the wounded Cleburne officer remained reported in stable condition, the person killed had not been publicly identified, and the Texas Rangers’ investigation was continuing. Authorities had not announced when additional findings would be released.
