Carrollton, Texas — A chilling murder plot unfolded in October 2020, shaking the community when Alyssa Burkett, a 24-year-old mother, was brutally murdered outside her workplace. Three days after the harrowing incident, Andrew Beard, the father of Burkett’s 1-year-old daughter, was arrested and charged with her murder. What initially seemed like a straightforward case soon revealed a deeper conspiracy, orchestrated by Beard’s then-fiancée, Holly Elkins.
Burkett met a tragic end when an assailant, later identified as Beard, ambushed her as she arrived at work at the Greentree Apartments. Eyewitnesses described a man, initially believed to be Black due to a makeup disguise, shooting Burkett through her car window, and subsequently attacking her with a knife when she attempted to flee, ultimately taking her life.
The morning of her death, Burkett’s mother, grief-stricken and desperate for answers, pointed the police towards Beard, hinting at the turbulent custody battle over their daughter, Willow, which had intensified in the months leading to the tragic day. The couple had previously appeared to reach a calm resolution regarding custody and child support in spring 2020, only for tensions to re-emerge ominously.
The investigation took a grim turn when police found incriminating evidence at Beard’s residence. Items recovered included GPS tracker batteries and two bottles of dark foundation makeup—tools used by Beard to disguise his appearance during the murder. Additionally, a black Ford SUV, used during the crime, was discovered abandoned near Beard’s home.
Upon his arrest, Beard soon implicated Elkins, detailing her integral role in the planning of Burkett’s murder. According to Beard, Elkins’ manipulation and detailed instructions were critical in the execution of the crime, pushing him to commit the heinous act.
As investigators dug deeper, they discovered a stream of text messages between Elkins and Beard, revealing Elkins’ deep-seated animosity towards Burkett. A text from Elkins to Beard read, “I hope you handle it I’m not coming home to bs,” to which Beard responded affirmatively, further indicating her involvement.
Elkins initially portrayed herself as cooperative during her interview with detectives, claiming ignorance and expressing a desire to assist in the investigation. However, her facade soon crumbled as evidence mounted against her. The case, which seemed aligned solely against Beard initially, expanded significantly with the FBI taking charge, due to the discovery of an unregistered silencer at Beard’s home.
Following a meticulous investigation, Beard, who pleaded guilty in June 2022, was sentenced to 43 years in prison in May 2023. Elkins, on the other hand, was apprehended by federal agents and faced charges of conspiracy to stalk and stalking using a dangerous weapon resulting in death. Her denials during the trial did little to sway the jury, which found her guilty on all counts after a brief deliberation.
The sentencing phase was particularly damning for Elkins, as she received two life sentences, a stark contrast to Beard’s 43-year term. This outcome underscored the perceived severity of her role in the conspiracy and murder, encapsulated by a federal prosecutor’s poignant remark during the trial: "Andrew Beard was a monster, but he was Holly Elkins’ monster."
This tragic case not only highlights the fatal extremes to which interpersonal conflicts can escalate but also serves as a grim reminder of the manipulative powers individuals can exert over others, leading to irreparable harm and devastation.
