MINEOLA, NY – In a deeply unsettling case, a Long Island mother was murdered in her home, leading to the swift arrest of her estranged husband. Asif Qureshi, 53, has been charged with the murder of his wife, Aleena Asif, amid allegations of domestic strife.
According to police, Qureshi waited until the couple’s children left the house before entering and using a chemical compound to commit the crime. This tragic event followed Aleena’s recent decision to file for divorce, a move that allegedly intensified Qureshi’s behavior.
The alarm was raised by the couple’s 18-year-old daughter, who contacted authorities after her mother failed to collect the children from school. Officers found Aleena unresponsive, with signs of chemical burns, and quickly determined the cause of death to be homicide by chemical asphyxiation.
Qureshi, who is unemployed, was arrested after a thorough investigation revealed a history of violence and erratic behavior. His refusal to accept divorce papers reportedly led to stalking behavior, culminating in the fatal encounter.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing Qureshi at Aleena’s residence multiple times, exhibiting suspicious behavior. On the day of the murder, he seized the opportunity to enter the home and carry out the attack.
During his arraignment, Qureshi showed no visible reaction and maintained his innocence through his attorney. The judge denied his request to be released on bail, emphasizing the risk of flight.
The couple’s children, aged 18, 14, and 7, are currently in the care of family members. As the legal process unfolds, the community is left mourning the loss of Aleena and grappling with the implications of domestic violence.
