Chatham, MA — A 46-year-old Chatham resident was apprehended early Tuesday after authorities launched an extensive search, following reports of a violent domestic assault. The suspect, identified as Gary Shawn McKenzie, is now facing multiple charges, including kidnapping and assault with a dangerous weapon.
The incident came to light late Monday when a woman, suffering from injuries, sought help at a local police and fire station in Harwich. She reported the assault had occurred in Chatham, prompting immediate communication between Harwich and Chatham police departments.
Due to the severity of her injuries, the victim was quickly taken to Cape Cod Hospital where she received medical treatment. The nature of her injuries underscored the urgent need for an immediate and thorough response from local law enforcement.
In response to the assault, a coordinated manhunt involving multiple agencies was organized. The Harwich Police Department, Massachusetts State Police, Barnstable County Sheriff’s Department, and Chatham Fire Department collaborated in the search for McKenzie. Advanced technology including drones and K9 units, along with analysis of cell phone data, played a crucial role in the operation.
The search concluded when authorities located McKenzie in South Chatham around 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday. His arrest marked the end of a nearly 10-hour long manhunt that covered various parts of the township.
During his arraignment at the Orleans District Court, McKenzie faced a slew of charges. These included assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious injury, witness intimidation, and resisting arrest. The charges reflect the serious nature of the crimes he is accused of.
The incident has raised concerns about domestic violence within the community and the importance of prompt and coordinated responses by law enforcement. Local authorities are urging residents to report any incidents of domestic violence and seek help if they find themselves in a threatening situation.
Community leaders and law enforcement confirmed they are reviewing the effectiveness of their current protocols and communication strategies between departments to ensure more efficient responses in future emergencies.
As the legal proceedings against McKenzie unfold, the community remains hopeful for justice for the victim and a continued discussion on the prevention of such violent acts in Chatham and beyond.
