Washtenaw County, MI – Tensions ran high during a court arraignment where Shuvonne Vinson, a suspect in a double homicide and kidnapping case, unleashed a tirade filled with profanities. The incident stemmed from a dispute over child custody and occurred at a Northfield Township home on New Year’s Day. Vinson, along with Gregory Callahan and Keith Finley, faces several charges, including murder and kidnapping, with the violent altercation resulting in two deaths and another person injured.
On January 3, law enforcement authorities detailed the events leading up to the confrontation. On the evening of January 1, officers were called to a residence on Nollar Bend Road where they discovered a grisly scene – two adults had been fatally shot, and a third was seriously injured but has since stabilized. The incident, according to the police, originated from a custodial disagreement involving a young child formerly in foster care.
The local community is shaken by the severity of the crimes. Neighbors described the victims, Jennifer Lyn Bernhard, 48, and Stevie Ray Smith, 74, as a couple deeply integrated into the community and reportedly pursuing the adoption of the child. They remembered the couple fondly and expressed profound grief at the loss.
During the arraignment, Assistant Prosecutor Amy Reiser described the nature of the crime as particularly horrific, advocating for denial of bail for Vinson. The proceedings took a dramatic turn when Vinson, participating via Zoom, vociferously interrupted Reiser, proclaiming her innocence and later launched into a profane outcry, accusing the victims of harming her child. The court struggled to maintain decorum as Vinson’s outburst escalated, culminating in her abrupt departure from the video call.
The judge, faced with the severity of the allegations against Vinson and her co-defendants, ruled against granting bail. Callahan and Finley were also arraigned, with Callahan denied bail and Finley’s arraignment postponed to the following day after he declined to participate.
Legal officials have charged the trio with an array of serious offenses. Each faces two counts of open murder, one count of assault with intent to murder, and additional charges related to home invasion, kidnapping, and conspiracy to commit these crimes. The severity of these charges reflects the grim nature of the crime and the tragic impact on the community.
In the wake of the incident, local law enforcement has intensified efforts to understand the full scope of the confrontation, ensuring such violence does not repeat itself. The community, while reeling from the tragedy, seeks to come to terms with the horrific events that disrupted their New Year celebrations and left an indelible mark on the local area’s history.
