SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Arturo Gamboa faces a potential murder charge linked to a shooting incident during a large protest in downtown Salt Lake City, despite not having fired a weapon himself. The protest, attended by around 10,000 people on June 14, turned chaotic when an individual designated as a “peacekeeper” allegedly discharged an AR-15 style rifle, hitting and killing a bystander in the process.
Law enforcement identified Gamboa as a suspect in the case, underscoring that his actions during the protest allegedly created significant danger resulting in the death of another. Arrest documents detail observations of Gamboa wielding an assault-style rifle and running into the crowd before the shooting occurred.
Utah Attorney Clayton Simms noted that the investigation is ongoing and will delve into various elements to understand Gamboa’s motives. Authorities will examine security footage and online activity to assess his intent, given that he could be charged with felony murder if found culpable for actions that led to someone’s death.
The individual who opened fire has not yet been publicly named; however, he reportedly wore a bright green vest identifying him as a peacekeeper. Simms mentioned that their affiliation with the protest does not grant them any special legal protections.

According to Simms, an armed citizen acting in what they perceive to be self-defense, especially during a heightened situation, might still be subject to legal scrutiny.
