Emergency responders were called to the scene around 4:17 p.m. after reports of a potential gas leak near Ridge Route Road, situated just north of the Northlake neighborhood.
Los Angeles County Fire Department Captain Brian Kight indicated that the department responded with extensive resources due to the potential hazards involved. The emergency teams later determined that the explosion was linked to a rupture in a 34-inch gas transmission line located north of Northlake Elementary School.
Residents in the surrounding area reported hearing what they described as a continuous loud noise, similar to that of a jet engine, following the explosion. Social media posts noted that the odor of natural gas reached as far as Sylmar and Porter Ranch, although officials stated the smell did not pose an immediate threat to public safety.
The gas company has successfully contained the situation by stopping the flow of gas from Saugus, approximately 30 miles south of the rupture site. Despite the incident, residential gas services remained unaffected, as homes are supplied through separate distribution lines.

As of 9:50 p.m. on Saturday, a shelter-in-place order applies to several specific areas, including Cambridge and Wayside Drive, along with multiple other neighborhoods in the vicinity. Ridge Route Road is currently closed from just north of Northlake Elementary to Templin Highway. Initially, both directions of the 5 Freeway were also closed due to the incident, but it has since reopened.
Motorists in the Santa Clarita and Castaic areas face multiple road closures and are encouraged to use navigation apps for alternate routes while practicing patience and safe driving habits.
