Karen Rivera and her brother were killed outside their north Harris County home as her young daughter remained nearby.
HOUSTON — A teen mother sought legal protection from her former boyfriend before authorities say he shot and killed her and her older brother during a dispute outside their north Harris County home, according to the young woman’s family.
Karen Rivera and her brother, Alberto Sidonio, were found with multiple gunshot wounds Sunday morning in the driveway of a trailer park in the 200 block of West Canino Road, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said. Both died at the scene. Rivera’s 2-year-old daughter, who investigators said she shared with the accused gunman, was not physically injured.
Authorities charged 19-year-old Angel Javier Rodriguez with capital murder after deputies said he fled the neighborhood and was later arrested in Humble. Investigators allege that Rodriguez shot Rivera during an argument and then shot Sidonio when he stepped in to protect his sister. The charge is an allegation, and Rodriguez is presumed innocent unless proved guilty in court.
Rivera’s aunt told KHOU-TV that the young mother had tried to obtain protection from Rodriguez before the shooting. The relative described a history of problems between the former couple and said Rivera had been afraid of him. Publicly available reports did not establish when Rivera sought protection, whether a court issued an order or what conditions she may have requested.
The family’s account adds a troubling element to a case that authorities have described as domestic violence. It raises questions about what relatives, police or courts knew before the confrontation and whether any legal restrictions involving Rodriguez were active when he arrived at the home. Law enforcement officials had not publicly released records answering those questions as of Tuesday.
Rivera was described as 17 in initial statements and some early news reports. Later information released through the Sheriff’s Office identified her as 18. Authorities had not publicly explained the discrepancy. Sidonio was 29.
Investigators said Rodriguez arrived to pick up the couple’s daughter and did not have a car seat. Rivera questioned him about the missing seat, authorities said, and an argument followed. Rodriguez is accused of pulling out a gun and shooting Rivera several times.
Sidonio came outside after the confrontation began and tried to shield his sister, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said. Investigators allege that Rodriguez then shot him before leaving in a vehicle. Relatives tried to save the siblings before emergency personnel arrived, but neither survived.
The toddler was present during the violence but was not struck by gunfire, authorities said. Another relative took custody of the child after the shooting. Officials have not disclosed further details about her care, citing the family’s privacy.
Deputies began searching for Rodriguez after witnesses identified him as the suspected shooter. He was found later Sunday in the 8800 block of Will Clayton Parkway in Humble and taken into custody. Jail records showed that he was being held in Harris County.
Rodriguez’s first court appearance was scheduled for Wednesday at the Harris County Criminal Justice Center. Prosecutors had not publicly announced whether they would seek the death penalty. Under Texas law, a capital murder conviction can result in life imprisonment without parole or, in qualifying cases pursued by prosecutors, a death sentence.
The Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains active. Detectives are expected to examine witness statements, court records, communications between Rivera and Rodriguez and any previous reports involving the former couple as prosecutors prepare the criminal case.
