Santa Monica, Calif. — A Santa Monica police officer is recuperating at home after being seriously injured in a sudden knife attack by a man outside the local police station, officials said. The incident, which occurred on the evening of Saturday, Oct. 5, resulted in the officer fatally shooting the assailant, who died at the scene.
According to the Santa Monica Police Department, the confrontation began when the officer, who was engaged with a resident over an unrelated issue, was approached by the man. The officer requested that the man wait as he finished the conversation. However, without any discernible provocation, the man attacked the officer.
Chief Ramon Batista described the event as an “unexpected and unwarranted attack.” The assailant extracted a knife and assaulted the officer, slashing and stabbing him. In defense, the officer retreated around the corner of the building, with the assailant in pursuit, leading to the officer-involved shooting.
Responding officers provided aid to the wounded man until EMS personnel arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed. Meanwhile, the officer was transported to a hospital and has since been released. His current condition is stable as he focuses on recovery at home.
