Buffalo Mass Shooting Victim’s Son Speaks Out as Justice Department Seeks Death Penalty for Teen Shooter

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The tragic shooting at the Tops supermarket on Jefferson Avenue in Buffalo on May 14, 2022, left a lasting impact on the community. Among the victims was Ruth Whitfield, the oldest person killed in the attack. Her son, Garnell Whitfield, is determined to keep her memory alive and seek justice for the senseless act of violence.

The Department of Justice has made the decision to seek the death penalty for Payton Gendron, the perpetrator of the mass shooting. Gendron, who was a teenager at the time of the attack, drove hundreds of miles to specifically target Black individuals in Buffalo. He is currently serving a life sentence after pleading guilty in a state trial.

During an interview with 2 On Your Side’s Claudine Ewing, Whitfield expressed surprise at the length of time it has taken for this decision to be made. When asked about his thoughts on the death penalty, Whitfield stated that he cannot advocate for anyone’s death, as it goes against his beliefs. He emphasized that Gendron’s incarceration is what prevents him from causing harm to others, and that the focus should be on addressing the underlying factors that may have led to the heinous crime.

Whitfield underscored that Gendron’s imprisonment will not bring his mother back, nor will it guarantee the safety of his family. Despite this, he remains committed to addressing the root causes that may have influenced Gendron’s actions, in order to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

The decision by the Department of Justice to seek the death penalty for Gendron reflects the gravity of the events that transpired at the Tops supermarket in Buffalo. However, for Garnell Whitfield, the pursuit of justice goes beyond the outcome of the trial, as he continues to honor the memory of his mother and advocate for a safer, more understanding community.
