Brooklyn, New York — A shooting early Sunday morning at the Taste of the City Lounge in Crown Heights resulted in three fatalities and left nine others injured, marking a grim event amid an otherwise record-low year for gun violence in the city. Authorities suspect that a dispute among patrons escalated into a gang-related confrontation just before 3:30 a.m., involving as many as four shooters.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the shootings as a “tragic, senseless act of violence” during a press conference. The incident stands out as one of the first significant mass shootings in New York City in months, following a sharp decline in firearm-related incidents. The mayor has voiced concerns over this uptick in violence, emphasizing the city’s ongoing efforts to reduce gun crime.
Casualties in the incident included a 19-year-old man who died at the scene, along with two others, aged 27 and 35, who succumbed to their injuries at a local hospital. The ages of the injured range from 19 to 61, and all are currently being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. At least 42 shell casings from both 9 mm and .45-caliber firearms were recovered from the site, indicating the severity of the attack.
Mayor Eric Adams stressed the importance of community involvement in combating gun violence, urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact law enforcement. He noted that crisis management teams had been deployed to assist with trauma counseling and to mediate support for the victims’ families, aiming to prevent any retaliatory actions.
“This is the second mass shooting we’ve experienced within a few weeks,” Adams remarked, highlighting the urgency of addressing the root causes of such violence. He reassured the public that efforts will continue to ensure that incidents like this do not become a regular occurrence.
Tisch acknowledged the anomaly of this event, citing a record low in shootings and shooting victims reported in the first half of the year. “This morning’s incident is unfortunate and deeply troubling, but we are committed to understanding the details and bringing those responsible to justice,” she said.
