Brooklyn, N.Y. — A man accused of a series of violent assaults on three women in the Flatlands area this past August now faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, Brooklyn’s district attorney announced Monday. The alleged attacks, described as both violent and unprovoked, have sent shockwaves through the community.
The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Damally Cain, reportedly engaged in the assaults on August 18, targeting women aged 66, 52, and 35. According to the authorities, Cain used extreme physical violence, including punching, kicking, and in one instance, slamming a victim’s head against the pavement. These incidents occurred within a startlingly short period, beginning around 4:30 p.m. near Flatbush Avenue.
Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez highlighted the severity of the assaults and the priority his office placed on prosecuting Cain to the fullest extent of the law. “We are committed to ensuring the safety of our community and making sure that violent individuals are held accountable for their actions,” Gonzalez stated.
The court-reported that Cain was apprehended four days after the attacks and his bail was set at $15,000, with the option of a $30,000 bond. During his Monday arraignment, Cain pleaded not guilty to the charges. Efforts to reach his attorney for a statement have so far been unsuccessful.
During the attack on the 66-year-old woman, a bystander courageously intervened, a move that prosecutors pointed out likely prevented further harm. The intervention prompted Cain to flee the scene, during which he accidentally left behind identifying documents including his passport and Social Security card, making it easier for police to locate him.
The 66-year-old victim was promptly transported to a hospital where she received treatment for a lacerated forehead. Meanwhile, the 35-year-old victim chose not to seek medical attention at the scene. The third victim, a 52-year-old woman, sustained multiple injuries including harm to her elbow, knee, and back.
Local safety advocates and community members expressed deep concern over the attacks, emphasizing the need for increased safety measures and community support systems, especially for vulnerable populations like women and the elderly.
