Bronx bus passenger killed after cellphone dispute, police say

Jonathan Pettigrew, 41, was shot aboard a Bx36 bus near East Tremont Avenue.

BRONX, N.Y. — A 41-year-old man was fatally shot Monday aboard an MTA bus in the Bronx after telling another passenger to stop yelling on his cellphone, police said.

Police identified the victim as Jonathan Pettigrew. The shooting happened just before 3 p.m. on a Bx36 bus near White Plains Road and East Tremont Avenue, a busy transit area in the Bronx. Pettigrew was shot in the abdomen and taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, where he was pronounced dead.

The gunman fled after the shooting, and no arrest had been announced by Tuesday afternoon. Police said the dispute appeared to begin when Pettigrew told the suspect to lower his voice during a cellphone call. The argument escalated while the bus was in service, and the suspect opened fire before leaving the bus on foot.

Investigators were reviewing the route, bus cameras and nearby surveillance video as they searched for the shooter. Police have not released the suspect’s name. Early descriptions said the gunman may have been a teenager, but police had not publicly confirmed his exact age. The weapon had not been recovered, and officials had not said whether Pettigrew and the shooter knew each other.

The shooting brought a heavy police response to the intersection, where traffic was slowed while officers and MTA personnel worked around the bus. Witnesses described a sudden rush of emergency vehicles and a large crime scene around East Tremont Avenue. One witness told CBS New York that police cars filled the area and traffic came to a standstill.

The Bx36 runs across the Bronx and is used by riders traveling through several dense neighborhoods. A shooting inside a moving or stopped city bus can affect passengers, the driver and people nearby, and it also leaves investigators with a tight scene to process. Officials did not report any other injuries.

The case remained an active homicide investigation Tuesday. Detectives were expected to continue gathering video, interviewing witnesses and tracking the suspect’s path after he fled. Police had not announced charges because no arrest had been made.
