Edinburgh, Scotland – A recent scientific discovery has shed light on the origin of the most powerful explosion of light ever observed, known as “BOAT” (Brightest of All Time). This event, detected by telescopes in October 2022, originated from a collapsing star, but its extreme brightness presents new challenges to current theories.
The explosion, identified as a gamma-ray burst, lasted a groundbreaking seven minutes and was 100 times brighter than any previous record. Despite theories suggesting that supernovas produce heavy elements like gold, none were found in the aftermath of BOAT, leaving scientists puzzled.

Dr. Tanmoy Laskar, from the University of Utah, suggested that the extraordinary brightness of BOAT could be attributed to the narrowness of the jets of material ejected during the supernova. This focused beam of light resembles a flashlight’s beam being concentrated into a narrow column, resulting in a more intense afterglow.
