ORILLIA, Ontario — In a community still reeling from a violent incident, two men were honored for their bravery and quick thinking during a moment of crisis. Mayor Don McIsaac presented certificates of bravery to Jordan Duffy and Chris Landra at a city council meeting on Monday, recognizing their selfless actions during an assault that occurred at Couchiching Beach Park on May 26.
Duffy intervened when he spotted someone in distress, only to find himself the target of a violent attack. Mayor McIsaac praised Duffy’s instinctive decision to help, noting, “He put himself at risk to protect a complete stranger, demonstrating remarkable bravery.” The assault left Duffy injured, both physically and emotionally, as he navigates the lingering effects of that day.
Now recuperating, Duffy shared his ongoing struggles, saying, “Physically, I’ve had setbacks, but it’s the emotional impact that’s challenging. It’s tough to sleep, and I often feel stressed.” Despite his modesty regarding his actions, he expressed gratitude for the recognition, saying the certificate serves as confirmation of his choice to step in during the crisis.
Landra, who came to Duffy’s aid during the assault, provided vital first aid and comfort in the chaotic aftermath. Reflecting on their connection, he stated, “I’ve developed a bond with Jordan and his family. We talk often and have plans to barbecue together. It feels like we’ve formed a lifelong friendship.”
The assault, which unfolded on a sunny afternoon in a park typically enjoyed by families, left the community shaken. In response, city officials have implemented measures aimed at enhancing safety in the area. Increased police patrols by the Ontario Provincial Police and expanded support services in the region have been initiated to foster a sense of security among residents.
