Bravery at the Cross: Security Team Foils Church Shooting in Michigan, Leaving One Injured

WAYNE, Mich. — A chaotic scene unfolded Sunday morning outside the CrossPointe Community Church as a gunman opened fire, only to be confronted by swift action from church security and an armed parishioner. The incident, which occurred around 11 a.m., left one person injured and ultimately resulted in the gunman’s death.

According to Wayne Police Chief Ryan Strong, the suspect, identified as Brian Anthony Browning, initially drove recklessly before exiting his vehicle clad in tactical gear and wielding both a rifle and a handgun. Witnesses reported that he began firing as he approached the church, hitting one individual in the leg. Fortunately, that person’s injuries were not life-threatening.

Browning’s connection to the church was primarily through his mother, who occasionally attended services. Pastor Bobby Kelly recounted having seen Browning at the church previously, describing him as someone who had expressed non-threatening thoughts about spirituality.

As the situation escalated, a parishioner took decisive action by hitting Browning with his pickup truck, which allowed security personnel time to respond. Those staff members fired at Browning, ultimately inflicting fatal wounds. Chief Strong commended their actions, stating that their quick response likely prevented a larger tragedy.

At the time of the shooting, approximately 150 worshippers were present in the church. Attendees expressed shock and confusion following the incident, with one congregant, Wendy Bodin, recalling hearing a loud noise and stepping outside to see chaos ensue. “At first, I thought he was hurt or in an accident,” she said, reflecting on the sudden turn of events.

Law enforcement officials have yet to establish a clear motive for Browning’s actions. Authorities noted it appeared he may have been experiencing a mental health crisis. The FBI is also involved in the investigation, with Deputy Director Dan Bongino confirming that federal resources have been deployed to assist local police.

Church officials and communities are now grappling with the aftermath of this traumatic event. Many are expressing gratitude for the quick thinking of those who intervened. “We are grateful for the heroic actions of the church’s staff members, who undoubtedly saved many lives and prevented a large-scale mass shooting,” Strong said.

As investigations continue, both the church and the surrounding community are left to ponder the possible ramifications of such violence and how to ensure safety in places of worship.
